Alright fellow Learnatics. It’s Day 3 of my Copywriting Challenge.
I’ve finished the Ultralearning book. It’s so actionable for this project.
And now for an update on the action steps for today.
Phase 1 is “Metalearning” in the book. Essentially, I need to learn how to learn copywriting.
A quick search shows a lot of resources out there that have some really superficial steps.
What I’m looking for in this step is super actionable. So things like “Be a Lifelong Learner” and “Read Every Day” aren’t going to cut it.
The reason it won’t cut it is because it’s not actionable enough. So how do I find exactly what’s actionable enough? As Simon Sinek would say “Start with Why”.
Why are you motivated to do this project? For me, I’d like to have a skill that would allow me to make a career transition if I choose. For me, making a transition means I would need to reliably make near the six-figure mark copywriting.
If you’re stumbling on this post well after the fact, you’ll want to do this same assessment for yourself. Just want to build the skill? Looking to make a career out of it? Are you writing for your own business, or do you want to become a freelancer and help businesses thrive by working with you?
Why is always tricky. Admittedly there’s more to my Why than I’ve even listed here, but they’re very personal and critical to keep you going.
It’s also one of the key factors we measure this copywriting plan by.
For example, my Why is to be able to generate six-figures a year through copywriting. So as I’m developing my plan, I need to focus more on skills that get paid.
Diving deep into persuasion, sales, negotiation and writing skills are going to have an impact on that. Time spent on graphic design however, is not likely in the cards. That’s a skill I can outsource because it doesn’t directly make me a better or higher paid copywriter.
After you get comfortable with your Why, you identify your What. This is the specific knowledge and skills that are required to accomplish this goal. The tool provided in the Ultralearning book is the Concepts, Facts and Procedures template.
This is something I’m working on. I’m building out a Google spreadsheet with the details for my current project. If you’d like access, you’ll need to be on the email list.
The final step is to identify How. How am I going to accomplish this plan. What environments do I need to create to encourage the learning. It’s something I’ve already started by getting up at 5 each morning to have ‘quiet time’ for which I can study and write.
Another aspect of How for me is actually posting on this blog. Despite being the largely unedited thoughts and notes, it’s a place where I can try different strategies and start building more portfolio. If for no other reason, it’s someplace I can show up every day.
Another aspect of How is determining the methods and resources that will be used. There are a ton of copywriting courses out there. This is an area in life where quality produces leverage.
Finding the right course for your skill level with the right target for completion is key.
Additionally, I’m looking for a course that has super actionable outputs. A test at the end of a course isn’t going to do it for me. I don’t care about being ‘certified’ in anything. What I want is results for myself and clients. Results in this business is sales.
So I’m toying with the idea of tweaking whatever course I use to create a better kind of portfolio. A portfolio of successes. I want to put my money where my mouth is. Easy to say, harder to do. Yet it’s the goal.
Alright, I’m getting a little long winded today. My writing time is up and I need to get back to work on this.
If you want access to more of the work I’m doing offline as I go through this process, get on the list. Subscribe in the sidebar. Frequency is likely to be often. Pitches are almost guaranteed. But it’ll be worth it and you’ll have more direct access to me to share your own ideas and influence this and upcoming challenges.
