Copywriting Challenge – What to the What?

Hello my Learnatics. It’sssss Friiiiiiii-day! Lets get ready to … ultralearn.

Cheesy intro. Check.

Yesterday I started detailing some of the Why, What and How for this challenge.

I made pretty good progress on the How. I stumbled across some very interesting potential resources as well.

One primary resource I’d like to talk about today is Gary Halbert’s own path to turning anyone into a world-class copywriter in 30 days.

Certain steps in his process are somewhat archaic, like typesetting a promo. However, I can’t help but wonder if there are alternatives that could prove just as fruitful.

I want to be cautious about coming off as if I think I could skip parts of his list and get the desired result. This project isn’t about taking a shortcut. It’s about doing the work in an extremely structured way.

I think there’s something to hand copying controls. Do I think it should be done online? Nope. I think it should be done by hand. Therefore I’m going to do some research on strategies for it though.

But as I was going through the Ultralearning book, I recall training that Benjamin Franklin did for himself that I see an opportunity to improve just studying the flow.

So one aspect of my plan (obviously still in the works) is to hand copy a control.

Then make several photocopies of it. (Or even better hand copy it several more times.)

After that, I’ll try to reverse engineer the control by identifying the different sections. Try to understand what the copywriter was doing and why. All this would be done as notes on a copy.

To take it a step further to help make sure I had learned it (and the nod to Ben Franklin) I could cut up the control into different paragraphs or sections. Then, mix them all up and force yourself to put them back in the correct order from memory.

I’ll keep toying with these ideas today, but that’s just a sample of how I’m actively planning this project.

If you want more access to the details and templates I’m creating for myself as I go through this process, go ahead and sign up for the email list. It’s the only place I’m planning on going into even more detail.

P.S. I’m really considering shortening my original target (of the end of the year) and working through something like what Gary Halbert proposes. So I’ll be researching it more today and trying to layer in more learning techniques to what he describes. More updates tomorrow.
